On December 6, 2008 Manny Pacquiao went toe to toe with boxing's most famous name Oscar De La Hoya at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada in a fight called the Dream Match. Pacquiao was quick to assert himself as the younger and more dominant fighter over De La Hoya from beginning to end.  De La Hoya's corner eventually threw in the towel before the start of the 9th round, thus giving Pacquiao a win by technical knockout.

The fight was presented by Top Rank, Inc and Golden Boy Promotions scheduled for a 12 round, non title fight contested at the 147-pound welterweight limit. Many had speculated whether Pacquiao can handle a fight at 147 pound, since it was much further than his weight.  Though Pacquiao was touted the pound for pound best fighter in the world, he did come in as the underdog against a naturally much bigger De La Hoya.

With a victory in dominant fashion, Pacquiao received $15 to $30 million (share of the pay per view), plus a guaranteed amount. Tickets were reportedly sold out within just hours they went on sale. The total amount of gate revenue were said to be around $17 million dollars, which gave the fight the second largest gate revenue in boxing history.

Pacquiao made history this night by catapulting his name along with some of the greatest names in boxing history. De La Hoya was bruised and beaten from the start of the bell and never really threatened Pacquiao the entire fight. In a sense, the fight itself was a let down but watching Pacquiao crowned himself the new king of boxing was a thrilling moment to witnessed. De La Hoya was on the verge of a knockdown if he had chose to continue for another round, but it was shocking to see this former champ not answer the bell after the 8th round.
