The Training of a Champion

manny pacquiao training for a fightManny Pacquiao was born with a talent to participate in boxing but it is his tenacious and relentless training that has made Manny Pacquiao a real champion. As many boxers will attest, you don’t simply get trained by Freddie Roach, but instead will be transformed into a hard knuckled and intense training machine. If you inspire to become a champion, then “The Cockroach” has all the necessary elements and tools for you to be the best. Luckily for Roach, Manny Pacquiao is truly a beast when it comes to training for a fight. Manny Pacquiao will put everything aside for a few months and simply live, eat, and breath nothing but boxing each and every single training session in the gym.

Manny Pacquiao usually trains in Roach’s Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles but did trained once in the Philippines for his final fight against Marco Antonio Barrera. Manny always arrives on time and on schedule for training and typically will start off with some shadow boxing with Buboy Fernandez looking over him. After warming up and loosening up, Manny Pacquiao will get into the ring with Freddie Roach to begin the “punch mitt”. Manny Pacquiao will throw a series of hard combination punches while Freddie holds the mitt thus showing us where all the power from that killer left punch comes from. Manny Pacquiao will also work on a series of footwork while complimenting the multiple combination punches on the mitt. The punch mitt training session is also Roach’s favorite because he gets so focus and into it that he believes even his Parkinson Disease is gone for that short period of time.

After the punch mitts, Pacquiao proceeds next to the double bags followed by the speed bags, and finally the heavy bags. He spends several minutes with each equipments, and seems almost as if he won’t stop until he tears apart each bags. Several rounds of skip rope follow suit and then the conditioning procedures supervised by Coach Eric Brown and Nonoy Neri. Seeing Manny Pacquiao jump rope is tiring to even watch as the Pacman puts his ankle, calves, and thighs through a grueling workout until his legs aches with pain. On certain days Freddie Roach and Manny Pacquiao will share a private but intense jog on the beautiful beaches of Los Angeles.

The final exercise consists of Brown “beating” Pacquiao’s mid-section with a stick to condition the abdominal muscles. Brown will also beat the stick on Pacquiao’s arms, shoulders, and chest. This procedure is not for the faint hearted to watch. This part of the training must be excruciating for Manny Pacquiao because each time the stick is smacked on Manny Pacquiao, he will grimace and at times will even yell out with agony as if being tortured. This training method is unique to only Manny Pacquiao, as he believes getting hit by the stick will prepare him from being shocked or stunned by a real punch. I believe it is obviously working for him; try this at home only at your own discretion.

After the stick training and eight hours of putting his body through a beating, Manny Pacquiao cools down and delights his fans by signing autographs and taking photo shoots. The day usually ends with Manny Pacquiao going to his favorite Thai restaurant and then going home for some karaoke with the fellas. With such a busy day Manny Pacquiao still finds time to be a family man.  One thing is for sure; Manny Pacquiao is an exemplified champion for all those who aspires to be the best. Manny Pacquiao absolutely loves putting his body through every ounce of hardcore training. Manny Pacquiao has earned his paychecks starting each day in training, and simply collects his money after knocking out his opponents with the same combination of punches he puts together in training.
